The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting July 21 in San Luis Obispo, California, to discuss and receive public comment on Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s previously announced plans to decommission the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

The hybrid meeting will be held from 6-9 p.m., Pacific time, in the San Luis Obispo County Government Building, 1055 Monterey St. The public may also participate through a telephone bridge line or a Microsoft Teams webinar. Details on how to access the virtual meeting are available in the NRC’s public meeting notice for the event.

PG&E has announced its intention to cease operations at Diablo Canyon’s two pressurized- water reactors when their licenses expire in 2024 and 2025. The company submitted its decommissioning plan, known as a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report, or PSDAR, in December 2019 and amended it in October 2021. The PSDAR includes a site-specific decommissioning cost estimate and an irradiated fuel management plan. It provides an overview of PG&E’s planned activities, schedule, projected costs, and environmental impacts for decommissioning the plant.

In addition to the July 21 public meeting, comments on the Diablo Canyon PSDAR may be submitted through the federal government’s rulemaking website, www.regulations.gov, using Docket ID NRC-2022-0132. Comments will be accepted through Oct. 19, 2022. Media planning to participate, in person or remotely, are asked to RSVP by email to OPA.Resource@nrc.gov or by calling 301-415-8200.
